Dicionário Português e Inglês App Reviews

Extremely useful and easy to use. I carry around a pocket dictionary in my backpack (Larousse), but this proved to be far more useful and accurate. While it isnt a dictionary for slang or idioms, it does include a great deal of expressions whose meanings I have never been able to comprehend (until now...such as the infamous "macacos me mordam" expression). The dictionary also includes useful charts for "curiosities," which include things like animal groupings (i.e., a school of fish, a gaggle of geese, etc.), mathematics, and even animal voices (buzz, roar, quack, etc.). The dictionary itself is outstanding, and the app only adds more functionality (and at an outstanding price, especially when compared with the price to own the hard copy of these dictionaries!). Switching between Portuguese, Portuguese/English (translations into English), and English/Portuguese (translations into Portuguese) is as simple as touching the button with the flags to cycle through the languages. I found that searching for a word is much easier and quicker with the app as opposed to an actual dictionary.

So many beautiful words! Definitions, usage suggestions, conjugations, cross referencing, slang. Useful resource for writing and translation.

I dont recommend anyone purchase this until they fix the search function. Essentially, it makes an otherwise good dictionary nearly useless. It does not recognize plurals or feminine forms, and it misses basic words, which it shows as not found. Also, no smart type or text prediction. Unfortunately, this is not ready for prime time!

However, I believe that this App merits another review, especially because of the above-mentioned negative review regarding the search function. The reviewer says that the search function is deficient. I disagree. A thorough reading of the help (Ayuda) instructions is necessary. There are five different ways to search. If one search method doesnt provide the results that one wants, there are four more options. Also, the user can search in Portuguese, Portuguese/English, and English/Portuguese, which allows one to cross-reference if there are doubts as to the meaning of the word being searched. However, it should be noted that the App seems to be designed more for native Portuguese speakers and/or users with a fairly advanced knowledge of Portuguese. The "advanced" search function is for Portuguese only. Also, the App is fairly complicated, not because it is poorly designed but because it does so many things, and does them well. Note also that the help instructions are in Portuguese only, or I have not found them in another language. Therefore, if the user does not understand Portuguese well, he or she may have difficulty understanding the instructions. I was interested in purchasing the App but hesitated after reading the negative review. After reading the negative review I contacted A&H Software via their website with my concerns and almost immediately received an email reply with a very good explanation of the search methods. For any App, the user is always pleased when the developers are customer oriented and this certainly is the case with A&H. In conclusion, the Michaelis Moderno Dicionário Português e Inglês is a very comprehensive and complete dictionary and the A&H Software Ltda. App is very well designed and executed. Just installed the update in the United States . Now it crashes as soon as I open the app. PLEASE fix this!

This dictionary may not serve the needs of either Portuguese speakers or of English speakers as well as they might wish. Most importantly, since both languages have complicated orthographic and pronunciation systems, the lack of an IPA representation of the phonemes is a significant weakness. There are recorded sounds instead, but the quality is so poor that I had trouble understanding the performance of several common English words. In addition, if the environment is noisy, as it might be out on the street, you’re not going to hear these at all. The history mechanism is very clunky. There’s no way to just use a keystroke or a button to go backward and forward in the history; you have to change to history mode to see the list. In addition, if you go back and forth between several nodes, each visit becomes a new entry in the history list, so the utility of the list gets smaller and smaller. I am glad to see another good English-Portuguese dictionary available in the App Store. I have been using the Collins bilingual released by Ultralingua. The Portuguese content is stronger in this dictionary, I think, but that program is easier to use. You might want to look at both of them.

Dicionário não funciona com ios8 e passada uma semana, nada de atualização. Evite por enquanto.

O dicionário dedicado ao inglês simplesmente não funciona após a atualização do iOS 8. Peço que corrijam este bug.
